Mobal is less convincing when you only need data for a brief vacation. A simple tourist eSIM from Mobal or another provider may be cheaper and faster to receive than a voice product. The voice eSIM access code cannot simply be emailed because identity verification is required.

This can be useful for restaurant bookings, delivery contact, local employers, schools, ticket services, and accounts that send SMS codes. However, a Japanese number does not guarantee acceptance by every bank, ticketing platform, or identity service. Those companies may also require residency, a Japanese address, or specific identification.

2. English-language ordering and support

Mobal markets the service to international visitors and residents, with English product pages, setup guidance, and customer support. This can reduce the friction of comparing Japanese-only carrier contracts or visiting a local shop.

3. Docomo network access and broad stated coverage

Mobal says its current Voice+Data products connect to the Docomo network and cites coverage of more than 99% of Japan’s population. That is a useful starting point for ordinary city and regional travel.

Population coverage is not the same as guaranteed reception on every mountain road, island, basement, rural rail segment, or inside every building. Check the official network coverage map for the exact destinations where connectivity is essential.

4. 5G is available on current voice-and-data plans

Mobal’s present Voice+Data range advertises 5G data, with monthly allowances from 1 GB and larger plans available. Unused data from the current allowance can roll into the next month under the published terms.

After the high-speed allowance is used, Mobal says data remains available at a reduced speed of around 200 kbps. The allowance resets on the first day of the calendar month.

5. No minimum contract

Mobal states that its current long-stay plans have no minimum contract and no termination fee. The first calendar month’s recurring fee is prorated according to the activation date.

This flexibility helps people staying for a semester, working holiday, temporary assignment, or uncertain period. It does not remove the need to cancel an ongoing plan correctly through the online account.

6. Data-only eSIM setup can be quick

For a data-only tourist eSIM, Mobal’s support guide says immediate activation details are generally emailed after the request is processed. A future activation date can also be selected.

The plan starts when it first connects to the network in Japan under the current support instructions. Install it while connected to reliable WiFi and save the QR code or manual installation details offline.

Mobal cons and important limitations

1. Voice eSIM delivery is not instant

Mobal cannot email the access credentials for its Japanese-number eSIM in the same way as a data-only tourist eSIM. The provider says it must verify identity and send a physical eSIM access code or make it available at a collection point.

If you need connectivity immediately after landing, arrange the voice product early or keep airport WiFi and a separate data connection available.

2. Headline monthly prices are not the complete cost

The current public long-stay range lists Voice-Only from ¥1,430 per calendar month and Voice+Data from ¥1,650 per calendar month. A SIM or eSIM purchase price is paid separately, and outgoing calls, outgoing SMS, optional roaming, voicemail, and other usage can add cost.

Compare the total for your intended stay:

  1. upfront SIM or eSIM price;
  2. prorated first calendar month;
  3. each following monthly charge;
  4. outgoing calls and SMS;
  5. optional features;
  6. the date and method for cancellation.

3. The cheapest Mobal product may not match your use

Voice-Only is for calls and SMS rather than ordinary mobile-data use. Voice+Data costs more. A data-only tourist eSIM is simpler for maps, messaging, translation, and app-based calls, but it does not provide a Japanese phone number.

Choose the service type first. Comparing only the lowest number on the page can lead to buying the wrong product.

For a Mobal eSIM, the phone must be unlocked, support native eSIM, and support the required Japanese network frequencies. Mobal currently specifies 4G/LTE Band 1, and VoLTE is required for calls.

5. 5G does not mean maximum speed everywhere

The presence of a 5G badge means the selected plan and compatible device can use 5G where available. It does not guarantee a particular download speed. Coverage, congestion, indoor reception, phone bands, and local network conditions still determine real performance.

For a short tourist plan, confirm whether the exact product is 4G or 5G. Do not assume every Mobal product has identical network access.

6. Cancellation can permanently remove the number

An ongoing plan continues until cancellation is requested. Mobal’s activation support also warns that a terminated Voice-Only number cannot be recovered or transferred through that product process.

Cancel only when you are certain the number is no longer needed, and keep enough time for any delayed usage charges to appear.

Mobal’s current Voice+Data pages identify Docomo as the underlying network and state coverage above 99% of Japan’s population. For most visitors, that is more useful than a plan relying only on overseas roaming.

Still, use coverage information carefully:

  • population coverage measures where people live, not every square kilometer;
  • rural Hokkaido, mountain areas, tunnels, and remote islands need route-specific checks;
  • indoor construction can weaken any carrier’s signal;
  • a phone missing important Japanese bands may perform worse than the network map suggests;
