eSIM vs Pocket WiFi in Japan (2026): Family Cost Examples

Choose an eSIM for each independent traveler or group when people may split up in Japan. Choose one Pocket WiFi when everyone will stay together and one shared connection is more convenient than setting up several phones. If one phone cannot use eSIM, either combine a physical SIM with an eSIM or keep the group on one router.

For the family examples below, the lowest published total is not always the best choice. A cheaper router can strand half the family without maps if the group separates, while four independent eSIMs may cost more than two hotspot-capable eSIMs when the family only splits into two groups.

Case 1: family of four, 10 days, mostly together

Assumption: two adults carry compatible phones, two children use WiFi-only tablets, and the family expects about 20 GB in total: roughly 8 GB on each adult phone plus 2 GB on each tablet. They normally stay together.

Recommendation: start with the NINJA WiFi 3 GB/day plan if this family will remain together and 3 GB on any single day is enough. Start with two Mobal eSIMs if the adults may separate or want a backup connection on each phone. Sakura’s router costs ¥2,178 more than the NINJA example here, but its published unlimited plan and up-to-15-device support may justify that difference for heavier shared use. These are not identical allowances. The NINJA plan slows after its 3 GB daily limit, while the two Mobal lines provide 20 GB of high-speed data across the plan period. The Sakura eSIM example provides up to 3 GB per line each day and reduces speed after the daily threshold. Do not rank these only by price if your family streams video or uses laptops heavily.

Case 2: four phones, 14 days, two groups

Assumption: two adults and two teenagers carry four phones. The family sometimes splits into two pairs. Expected use is 7 GB per person, 28 GB total. The important requirement is two independent connections, not necessarily four.

Recommendation: use two Mobal 50 GB eSIMs—one on an adult phone in each pair—when the two pairs stay together and both phones support reliable hotspot use. The published base total is ¥8,140 lower than four separate Mobal 10 GB eSIMs and provides substantially more total data. Choose four 10 GB eSIMs only when all four people may separate or hotspot battery drain is unacceptable.

The two NINJA routers are a rational non-affiliate alternative when eSIM compatibility is poor, but each pair shares only 1 GB per day before reduced speed. Sakura advertises an automatic group discount for two or more Pocket WiFi devices; the table deliberately excludes that changing promotion and shows the tax-inclusive base total so the comparison remains auditable.

Case 3: two phones, 7 days, one phone without eSIM

Assumption: two adults and one child stay together most of the time. There are two unlocked phones, but only one supports eSIM. Expected shared use is up to 3 GB per day.

Recommendation: choose the NINJA 3 GB/day router for the stated data use when the family will stay together. Choose the physical SIM plus eSIM combination when the adults need independent maps and messaging. The Sakura router sits between them: it costs less than two independent lines and publishes a higher allowance, but it still creates one point of failure.

Before choosing the physical SIM, confirm that the phone is unlocked, accepts the correct SIM size, supports the plan’s network bands, and can be collected or delivered before it is needed. Before choosing either router, confirm pickup hours, return method, optional protection, and loss or late-return charges.

What the official plan terms mean

Mobal tourist eSIM

The price examples use Mobal’s data-only tourist eSIMs. Its official page lists the 16-day 10 GB plan at ¥4,620 and the 16-day 50 GB plan at ¥5,170, including tax. After the high-speed allowance is used, the current product page says the line remains connected at reduced speeds up to 200 kbps. Hotspot use is supported, but Mobal does not guarantee it on every device and operating system.

Sakura Mobile travel products

For the sample dates entered on September 13, Sakura listed:

• 10-day 3 GB/day eSIM: ¥5,610 including tax;
• 14-day 3 GB/day eSIM: ¥6,930 including tax;
• 7-day 3 GB/day physical SIM: ¥4,950 including tax;
• 7-day / 10-day / 14-day Unlimited Pocket WiFi: ¥8,558 / ¥9,878 / ¥11,616 including tax.

Sakura’s 3 GB/day eSIM page says speed falls to 200 kbps after the daily threshold; its 3 GB/day physical SIM page showed 1 Mbps after the threshold for the selected example. Its current Pocket WiFi page says one device can connect up to 15 devices and lists a 20-hour battery. Those are provider specifications, not measurements made by this site.

NINJA WiFi non-affiliate comparison

NINJA WiFi’s official rates page lists tax-inclusive router prices of ¥440/day for 1 GB/day and ¥770/day for 3 GB/day. It says speed falls to 128 kbps after the daily allowance. Optional insurance, battery rental, adapters, and delivery or return services can add cost. The scenario tables exclude all optional items.

Calculate the whole-trip cost

For an eSIM or physical SIM, multiply the full-duration plan by the number of people or groups that need an independent connection. Do not use an 8-day plan to price a 10-day trip.

For a router, include the entire rental period, tax, any mandatory delivery or return charge, and the number of routers needed to preserve connectivity when the family splits. Keep optional insurance and accessories in a separate line.

Purchase checklist

Before paying, verify all of the following on the current product and checkout pages:

1. Exact dates: activation day, expiry time, pickup date, and return date.
2. Every phone model: unlocked status, eSIM support, network bands, and SIM size.
3. Independent groups: how many people may separate and who carries each connection.
4. High-speed allowance: daily or plan-wide limit, reduced speed, and hotspot allowance.
5. Full total: tax, mandatory delivery, return, pickup, and required accessories.
6. Failure plan: offline maps, saved booking details, charging cable, and another way to contact the group.

Bottom line

The family structure should decide the format before the provider does:

• One group: compare one Pocket WiFi with the number of phone lines you would otherwise buy.
• Two groups: provide one connection per group; one router for the whole family is not equivalent.
• Everyone independent: use one compatible eSIM or SIM per person.
• One incompatible phone: compare a physical SIM + eSIM pair with one shared router.

Then check the live total and terms. A low headline price is useful only when the plan covers every travel day, every required group, and the data you actually expect to use.
