Mobal eSIM setup is straightforward only after you identify which product you bought. A Data-Only eSIM can usually be prepared digitally, while a Voice+Data or Voice Lite eSIM uses a different process because it provides a Japanese phone number.

This guide separates those paths, then shows what to check on iPhone and Android before and after arriving in Japan.

Current-information note: Mobal’s product, activation, installation, compatibility, and troubleshooting pages were checked on September 9, 2026. Menu names vary by phone and operating-system version. Follow the instructions in your own Mobal confirmation email when they differ from this overview.

The short answer

Your Mobal product What starts the process Typical activation message Important difference
Data-Only eSIM MyAccount → Services → Activate Immediate requests: email in about 15 minutes; future requests: about 24 hours before the selected date No Japanese phone number
Voice+Data eSIM Physical eight-character access code, then MyAccount activation Processing can take up to 24 hours in some cases May require your device’s 32-digit EID
Voice Lite eSIM Physical eight-character access code, then MyAccount activation Processing can take up to 24 hours in some cases Japanese number, but only a small data allowance

Do not wait until you are standing at airport immigration to begin the voice-eSIM process. Mobal says the voice-product access code is mailed or collected rather than simply sent by email.

Before you start

Complete these checks before activating or installing any Mobal eSIM:

  • confirm the exact product name in Mobal MyAccount;
  • confirm that the phone is carrier-unlocked;
  • confirm that the device has built-in eSIM support;
  • keep a stable WiFi connection available;
  • disable Airplane or Flight Mode during installation;
  • save your order number, confirmation email, and setup instructions offline;
  • understand when the selected plan begins and when charges start;
  • keep your home SIM settings under control to avoid roaming charges.

For most phones, dialing *#06# shows device identifiers. An eSIM-capable device normally shows a 32-digit EID. Mobal does not support adapters that add eSIM-like functionality to a phone that was not built for eSIM.

Voice products need additional compatibility checks. The phone must support the relevant Japanese network frequencies and VoLTE for calls. Mobal also limits its current Voice+Data eSIM to specified EID types, so use the provider’s live compatibility page rather than relying only on the presence of an EID.

First, identify your Mobal eSIM

Log in to Mobal MyAccount and read the exact product name shown in Services.

Data-Only eSIM

Choose this path when the product name says Data-Only or 5G Unlimited Data-Only. It is designed for mobile data, not conventional Japanese calls or SMS.

Voice+Data eSIM

Choose this path when the product name says Voice+Data 5G eSIM, Voice+Data eSIM, or Voice+Data 4G eSIM. These products include a Japanese phone number as well as mobile data.

The distinction between the current 5G product and the older 4G product matters during data setup because they use different APN instructions.

Voice Lite eSIM

Choose this path when the product name says Voice Lite. It includes a Japanese phone number and a small data allowance, but it is not a substitute for an ordinary high-data travel plan.

How to activate a Mobal Data-Only eSIM

Step 1: Open the service in MyAccount

Sign in to Mobal MyAccount, open Services, and select Activate next to the correct Data-Only eSIM.

Confirm that the phone is eSIM-compatible when prompted. Do not activate a plan for a different device by mistake.

Step 2: Choose the activation date

Mobal lets you request immediate activation or select a future activation date.

For an immediate request, Mobal says the email titled “Your Mobal eSIM is ready!” normally arrives within approximately 15 minutes. For a future date, the company says the email normally arrives about 24 hours before that date.

Mobal also states that products requiring activation should be activated within 30 days of purchase, or within 30 days of collection when pickup was selected.

Step 3: Open the setup instructions

The confirmation email provides separate iPhone and Android setup options. Open the instructions for the phone that will actually use the eSIM.

The email contains a QR code or manual installation details. Keep them private. If the QR code is displayed on the same phone, newer iPhones may be able to install it from a saved image; otherwise open the code on another screen or use the manual method.

Step 4: Install over WiFi

Connect the phone to stable WiFi and make sure Airplane Mode is off.

Follow the QR-code or manual-installation route in the Mobal email. Give the line a clear label such as “Mobal Japan” so you do not confuse it with your home line.

When the phone asks for default lines:

  • keep your existing line or Apple ID for voice and iMessage when using Data-Only;
  • select Mobal for cellular data;
  • turn off automatic cellular-data switching if you do not want the phone to fall back to your home carrier.

Step 5: Do not panic if it says “Activating”

A Data-Only eSIM installed outside Japan may remain on “Activating” or “Connecting to network.” Mobal says its services do not support international roaming and will not connect until the device is in Japan.

If the Mobal line is visible in the phone’s SIM-management screen, the profile may already be installed correctly. Do not delete it just because it cannot connect overseas.

Step 6: Connect in Japan

After arrival, enable the Mobal line and select it for cellular data. Follow the correct APN or data-settings link in the confirmation email if required.

Mobal says the Data-Only plan officially starts on the day it first connects to the network in Japan, not simply when the profile is installed overseas.

How to activate a Mobal Voice+Data or Voice Lite eSIM

Step 1: Receive or collect the access code

Voice-capable eSIMs require an eight-character access code containing letters and numbers. Mobal sends it by mail or provides it at the selected collection point.

This physical step is part of the identity process. The access code is not the same thing as the QR code used later to install the eSIM profile.

Step 2: Open Services in MyAccount

After receiving the access code, sign in to MyAccount, open Services, and choose Activate next to the correct Voice+Data or Voice Lite product.

Enter the access code. Depending on the product, Mobal may also request the device’s 32-digit EID.

For many phones, the EID is available by dialing *#06#. It can also appear under Settings → General → About on iPhone or Settings → About phone → Status information on Android.

Step 3: Choose the plan and activation date

Voice+Data buyers may need to select a short-term or ongoing plan and a high-speed data allowance. Voice Lite has its own ongoing-plan path.

Read the billing summary before submitting. For ongoing service, activation dates, prorated first-month fees, calendar-month renewals, usage charges, and cancellation timing can affect the total.

If you request immediate activation, Mobal warns that processing can take up to 24 hours in some cases. When a future date is selected, the provider normally begins processing in advance so the service is ready on that date.

Step 4: Wait for the activation confirmation

After activation, Mobal sends an email with the assigned Japanese phone number and installation instructions. A phone number is assigned at activation, so it is not available in advance.

Do not try to reuse a Data-Only QR workflow for a voice product. Follow the email attached to the exact service shown in MyAccount.

Step 5: Install the voice eSIM

Depending on the product and phone, a Voice+Data eSIM may arrive as a Docomo push notification or may require QR-code or manual installation.

If manual installation reports that the profile already exists, check the SIM-management screen before trying again. A push installation may already have completed.

During setup, select the Mobal line for calls and, for Voice+Data, cellular data. Decide separately whether iMessage should continue using your existing number or Apple ID.

Step 6: Install the correct data settings

After the profile is installed, follow Mobal’s data-settings guide for the exact product name in MyAccount.

This is particularly important for Voice+Data:

  • Voice+Data 5G eSIM is the newer version;
  • Voice+Data eSIM or Voice+Data 4G eSIM is the older version;
  • each version has its own APN instructions.

On iPhone, Mobal instructs users to download its APN configuration profile through Safari. On Android, users may need to create an APN manually. Use the current values on Mobal’s page rather than copying an old setup screenshot from another website.

iPhone setup checkpoints

Menu names can differ by iOS version, but these checks prevent most line-selection mistakes:

  1. Open Settings → Cellular or Mobile Data.
  2. Confirm that the Mobal eSIM appears and is enabled.
  3. Give it a recognizable label.
  4. Select Mobal as the cellular-data line when you want to use it.
  5. For Voice+Data or Voice Lite, select Mobal as the voice line when needed.
  6. Disable cellular-data switching if fallback to the home line could create roaming charges.
  7. Install the correct Mobal APN profile through Safari when the product guide requires it.
  8. Turn WiFi off temporarily when testing mobile data in Japan.

If a PIN is requested while installing an iPhone configuration profile, Mobal says this normally means the phone’s device passcode, not a new SIM PIN.

Android setup checkpoints

Android menu names vary substantially by manufacturer. In general:

  1. Open Settings → Network & Internet, Connections, or SIM manager.
  2. Confirm that the Mobal eSIM is present and enabled.
  3. Select Mobal for mobile data.
  4. Select Mobal for calls if the plan includes voice.
  5. Disable automatic data switching when appropriate.
  6. Create and select the APN shown in the current guide for your exact Mobal product.
  7. Confirm that Preferred Network Type allows the product’s supported 4G or 5G mode.
  8. Turn WiFi off temporarily and test a webpage in Japan.

Saving an APN is not always enough; make sure the new profile is selected as active.

Arrival-day test

Run this short test after arriving in Japan:

  • confirm that the Mobal line is enabled;
  • confirm that Mobal is the selected cellular-data line;
  • turn off WiFi;
  • wait a few minutes, then reboot once if necessary;
  • load a simple webpage;
  • check maps or messaging;
  • for voice products, place a short call and confirm the assigned number;
  • verify that the home line is not supplying data.

Mobal notes that occasional maintenance between late Tuesday and Wednesday morning Japan time can delay first connection. If all settings look correct during that window, wait briefly and retry before changing the installation.

Mobal eSIM not working: troubleshooting order

Use this order to avoid turning a simple settings problem into a replacement problem.

Symptom Check first
QR code reports an error Check whether a push notification already installed the eSIM and whether another active eSIM must be disabled
“Activating” outside Japan Confirm the Mobal line is visible; it cannot connect internationally
Signal but no data Select Mobal for cellular data, use the correct APN, turn WiFi off, and reboot
Calls do not work Confirm Mobal is the voice line and the phone supports VoLTE
5G does not appear Confirm the exact product, phone bands, network mode, location, and coverage
PDP authentication failure on iPhone Remove conflicting APN profiles and reinstall the correct current Mobal profile through Safari
Still no connection Record the phone model, location, screenshots, APN, network mode, and SIM-management settings for Mobal support

Do not delete the eSIM as a first fix

Mobal repeatedly warns users not to delete an installed profile while troubleshooting.

Replacement rules vary by product. A deleted 5G Unlimited Data-Only eSIM cannot currently be reinstalled and requires a new order. Some newer 4G Data-Only profiles can be reinstalled on the same device, while voice-product replacement rules and phone-number retention differ.

First take screenshots, verify settings, and contact support. Delete the profile only when Mobal specifically instructs you to do so or you fully understand the replacement consequence.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install a Mobal eSIM before flying to Japan?

Yes, an eligible Data-Only profile can be installed before travel over WiFi. It may show “Activating” because Mobal service only connects in Japan. Voice products first require the access-code and activation process.

When does a Mobal Data-Only eSIM start?

Mobal says the plan begins on the day the installed eSIM first connects to the network in Japan. Still choose the activation date carefully and follow the confirmation email for the exact product.

Does the QR code give me a Japanese phone number?

Not by itself. Data-Only products do not provide conventional voice or SMS. A Japanese number comes with an eligible Voice+Data or Voice Lite product and is assigned when activation completes.

Why did Mobal ask for an EID?

The EID identifies the phone’s embedded eSIM chip. Mobal may request it for a voice-capable eSIM and currently limits Voice+Data compatibility to specified EID types.

Should data roaming be on?

Do not assume a generic travel-eSIM rule applies. Use the setting shown in the instructions for your exact Mobal product. Keep data roaming and cellular-data switching disabled on the home line unless you intentionally accept your home carrier’s charges.

What should I save before departure?

Save the confirmation email, QR or manual installation information, product name, activation date, MyAccount login route, official data-settings page, support contact, and an offline map for arrival.

Bottom line

The most important Mobal setup step happens before scanning a QR code: identify whether the service is Data-Only, Voice+Data, or Voice Lite.

Data-Only is the faster digital path and normally starts when it first connects in Japan. Voice products require a physical access code, identity-linked activation, and sometimes an EID before installation. For every product, install on stable WiFi, select the correct data line, follow the product-specific APN instructions, and do not delete the profile during troubleshooting.
